Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary was built in 1829, and was the first penitentiary to use the Separate System or “Pennsylvania System” which was based around individual confinement of prisoners. This system ended up being used in over 300 penitentiaries around the world. While its effectiveness has been debated throughout its existence (and to this day), it was a landmark in prison systems, though it was abandoned in 1971 due to overcrowding issues. Today, the prison can be toured in its glory and ruin, offering an often harrowing look at what prison life was like during the 140+ years of its operation. Some notable features include its celebrity cells; including the first incarceration of Al Capone, where he lived far more comfortably than other prisoners, with an armchair, radio, desk and lamps.
